In 1994 the basic Datis design was harmonised to have identical remote control connections to the new DA6U5, to eliminate audio pairs passing along the control multicore cable as in non-CAA equipment built prior to 1987. The DA6U4 is therefore replaced by the DA6U5 in new system designs.
Current equipment is supplied with dual input power as standard. (48Volt D.C. and/or 230Volt A.C.)
The Royal Navy took delivery of the first REAL VOICE SYNTHESIS system in 1995, based on the NATO DA6U6 with an add-on unit to provide spoken messages generated automatically from a weather page on their EDDS equipment.
A civil solution was devised the following year. METARVS was installed at Manchester Airport to upgrade the classic DA6U5 Datis that had been in use continuously since being installed in 1989.
The DA6U8 combines the compact voice store technology from the proven DA3U4 and the plug in units developed for METARVS to provide a DATIS for the next decade.

The Datis can be controlled from one of either two sets of press buttons, which are located on the front panel of the main equipment ( the local buttons ) and at the remote control position.
( the remote buttons ).
The set of buttons that has control is determined by the position of the lock switch on the front panel of the Datis subrack.
This lock switch routes a nominal plus twelve volts to one of the two sets of press buttons.
The local buttons are intended for use in servicing and testing the equipment.
Press button switches are the "momentary make when pressed" type, both local and remote buttons have IDENTICAL FUNCTIONS

The local control panel has twelve Illuminated push button control switches in two columns, they can be grouped by function.
1. STORE SELECTION Datis Output
2. MONITOR SELECTION Headset Signal
3 MESSAGE CONTROL Message Recording and check
4 DATIS CONTROL Executive Control
Group 1
STORE 1 TO LINE. Selects message "1" for transmission.
STORE 2 TO LINE Selects message "2" for transmission.
STORES OFF Disconnects both stores from Datis output.
The store selection controls the priority of the transmitted message.
Note that the three controls are interlocked with the lower button of group 4, the STORE CONTROL.
Datis operation requires that STORE CONTROL be held down while the selection is made.
